Pool Operation Basics

Understanding the basic parts of your pool’s circulation system can help you keep your water clean, clear, and ready to enjoy.

Skimmer

The skimmer is the gateway to your filtration system. It sits at the top of your pool and pulls in water along with surface debris such as leaves, insects, and oils. To keep your water clear, it is important to check and empty the skimmer basket at least once a week, ensuring that water can flow freely and that your pump isn't working harder than it needs to.

Pump

The pump is the heart of your pool's circulation system, creating the pull that draws water from the skimmer and the push that sends it through the filter. By keeping the water moving, the pump prevents stagnation and ensures that your sanitizers are distributed evenly. For a clean pool, run your pump for 8-10 hours a day and check the pump basket for debris regularly.

Return

The return jets are the final step in the circulation cycle. After the water has been filtered and cleaned, it re-enters the pool through these jets. By positioning return jets slightly downward and in a consistent direction, you can create a vortex that helps push floating debris toward the skimmer for more efficient cleaning across the entire surface of your pool.
